America's manufacturers are facing the following key issues. Links to resources to help address these issues are below. Also see Federal, State, and Local Government Resources.

  • Standards
In an increasingly globalized economy, the capacity to compete successfully will depend on the ability of individual manufacturers to satisfy national and international standards. Most U.S. manufacturers understand the importance of achieving these goals and have invested heavily in satisfying not only product standards, but quality and environmental standards as well.

  • Exporting
Increasing exports is critical for U.S. businesses to remain competitive in a global economy. The U.S. Department of Commerce is working to expand market access and opening new foreign markets to facilitate exports of U.S. Companies.
  • Regulatory Reform
The Manufacturing in America Report recommends regulatory reform as a key activity the federal government can undertake to ensure the continued competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing. The Administration is focused on energy, healthcare costs and high or distortionary tax and regulatory compliance burdens that make it harder for U.S. manufacturers to attract investment and compete.
  • Research & Development and Innovation
During the last century, Americas’ strong economy was created and flourished because of Investment in Research and Development (R&D). To maintain our lead in R&D and innovation, it is critical to continue investing in new technologies that fuel productivity gains, improve U.S. security and standards of living for Americans.
  • Workforce Development
One of the most critical challenges facing the manufacturing industry in this country is the need for highly skilled workers that can continue to promote innovation. Supporting the development and ongoing maintenance of curriculum by educational institutions and businesses in training the manufacturing workforce is key in sustaining America’s global competitive position.
  • Intellectual Property Rights
Protecting Intellectual Property Rights is critical in promoting open markets and maintaining a level playing field for U.S. businesses. Combating these unfair trade practices can be achieved through expanding cooperative efforts with developing country trading partners and investigating allegations of theft of intellectual property.
